Resumo
Despite his importance in the purist stage of Central American lexicography, Antonio Batres Jáuregui has not received the attention from researchers that has been given to others such as, for example, the Costa Rican Gagini or the Honduran Membreño. In this sense, the purpose of this work is to analyze the phonic information collected in his «Vicios del lenguaje y provincialismos de Guatemala» [Language Vices and provincialisms of Guatemala] (Guatemala City: Bounding and National Typography, 1892), in the conviction that this work constitutes an authentic dialectology treatise that describes the popular speech of the country in the late nineteenth century. In this way, we have not only sought to compile all the phonic information that appears in the pages of the dictionary in order to reconstruct its situation at that time, but also to extract the diastratic and diaphasic information that will allow us to offer a deeper and, therefore, more comprehensive description of the phenomena that characterize it.
