Abstract

The present doctoral research work evaluates the understanding, application, and diverse approaches that have been generated around the term of tourist vocation of the territory, both by the academic literature, as well as in the teaching and public action in the tourism sector of the various urban destinations of Ecuador. The premises that gave rise to the development of the thesis were: the determination of urban destinations requires the participation and timely guidance of the public sector that directs its actions towards efficient territorial tourism development and the approach to the territory's tourism vocation can favor the development of the place if it is done in a technical way avoiding, as far as possible, the influence of political discourse in the decision making process of the urban destination.These premises of analysis gave way to the main hypothesis of the work, which tries to answer whether the territories with a predominance of political ideologies as part of the discourse for the development of tourist activities in a city show a lower degree of tourist vocation; from which the following secondary hypotheses are derived: the conceptual approach to the term "tourist vocation of the territory" is discordant between academia and public managers of tourism and the determination of the tourist vocation of the territory depends clearly on intrinsic elements of the place, leaving aside the extrinsic elements of the same...
