Resumen
In ancient Greek there are phraseological units with geographical reference that reflect the characteristic features attributed to the inhabitants of a city or region. We will deal specifically with phraseological units related to the ancient Region (today Reggio) and other cities of ancient Calabria (Sybaris, Crotone, Terine). We will study the information transmitted by ancient (and medieval) Greek texts about the sense in which these expressions were used and about their origin, specifically analyzing the following expressions: «to be more coward that the inhabitants of Region» (῾Ρηγίνων δειλότερος) and «hare of Region» (Ῥηγῖνος λαγώς); two expressions whose main character is the poet of the 6th century B.C. Ibycus of Region, «to be more old-fashioned than Ibycus» (ἀρχαιότερος Ἰβύκου) and «the cranes of Ibycus» (αἱ Ἰβύκου γέρανοι); the locution «art of Glaucus» (Γλαύκου τέχνη), which probably refers to the Pythagorean musician Glaucus of Region (5-4th B.C.); other phraseological units that refer to the inhabitants of Sybaris and to the famous athletes of Crotone (and Terine).
