Résumé
The number of older people is growing, especially in countries such as Spain. As a result, professionals dedicated to social and healthcare intervention with the elderly are increasingly in demand and postgraduate specialisation in the field of social gerontology is even beginning to increase. In this paper, the training in Gerontological Social Work (GSW) in the degree of social work in public and private universities in Spain is addressed and analysed. To this end, the development of gerontology was compared with other fields of intervention by identifying subjects related to intervention with older people, distinguishing between compulsory and optional subjects. The results show that 92% of Spanish universities offer training oriented towards GSW and most of the universities provide this training as compulsory, also, within the areas of specialisation, intervention with the elderly is the most offered at a national level. Findings are discussed and challenges towards specialised training in GSW are raised.
