Zusammenfassung

Hermann Berendt is considered one of the most significant americanists specialized in the Spanish of Nicaragua. This article attempts to fill a blank space in the lexicography of Nicaragua through his work, Palabras y modismos de la lengua castellana, según se habla en Nicaragua (1874). Therein, it will be analyzed the dictionary entries associated with the animals. Thanks to his work, it is possible not only to assess and value Berendt’s contribution to the linguistic field but also to get to know further aspects which allow us to understand the state of Nicaragua in the 19th century.
