Respuestas de la Unión Europea al proceso secesionista en Cataluña

This article focuses on the European Union's responses to the measures taken by the Spanish central authorities regarding the secessionist process in Catalonia in 2017. Article 4.2 TEU enshrines the EU’s respect for the exclusive right of each Member State to ensure its territorial integrity. The paper shows the position of the European institutions on the effects of a secession in a Member State: the new state and its citizens would be outside the EU. It also analyses the position of EU institutions in support of the constitutional instrument of intervention authorised by the Spanish Senate.
