Doctor by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid with the thesis Problemas de factorización y sistemas integrables 1991. Supervised by Dr. Francisco Guil Guerrero.

My fields of research are Mathematical Physics and Applied Mathematics. In particular, I have a relevant activity in the theory of Integrable Systems, in the field of Orthogonal Polynomials and also in Special Functions Theory. Recently, I have also investigated Random Walks and Markov chains beyond birth and death. Other research interests range from the application of the Riemann—Hilbert problem in the characterization of non Abelian Painlevé discrete equations, to the use of the Gauss—Borel factorization of semi-infinite Gram matrices for the finding of Christoffel and Geronimus formulas in different extended orthogonalities. I have studied matrix orthogonal polynomials, multivariate orthogonal polynomials, mixed multiple orthogonal polynomials and Sobolev orthogonal polynomials. The link between new integrable systems or families of solutions and these orthogonal systems has been also an important subject of my studies. I have coauthored 118 research papers, 88 of them in JCR journals (of which 48 in Q1). I have published in scientific journals such as Advances in Mathematics (4), Inverse Problems (3), Communications in Mathematical Physics (1), International Mathematics Research Notices (1), Journal of Nonlinear Sciences (1), Bulletin of Mathematical Sciences (1) , Studies in Applied Mathematics (4), Publications of the RIMS (1), Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications (2), Linear Algebra and its Applications (1), Letters in Mathematical Physics (1), Physica D: Nonlinear Phenomena (3) and Physics Letters B (8). I am Academic Editor of two scientfic jounals: Mathematics and Symmetry. Currently, I am leader of a Spanish National Plan project and has been leader of another Spanish National Plan project, both in the Mathematics area. I have been member of 6 international research projects and 10 in Spain. I have made a total of 45 contributions in international research congresses and also 34 research seminars at different universities.I have been visiting professor at the following centers: Johannes Kepler Linz University (Austria), University of Averio (Portugal), University of California at Berkeley (USA), Tsinghua University (Beijing, China), China University of Mining and Technology (Beijing , China), Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium), at the SISSA-International School for Advanced Studies in Trieste (Italy), at the Isaac Newton Institute of the Cambridge University (United Kingdom), at La Sapienza, Universitá di Roma (Italy) ) and at Leeds University (United Kingdom). I have supervised 3 PhD theses and and nowadays I am supervising 2 more. I have organized R & D & I activities, such as international scientific conferences.
