Maurizio Mattesini has been a Full Professor of Geophysics at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) since 2020, affiliated with the Department of Earth Physics and Astrophysics, Faculty of Physics. He has authored numerous articles in Science Citation Index journals, actively contributed to many conference presentations, and participated in international collaborations and research projects funded by the European Union, including the EUROCORES and TMR programs. He has served as Principal Investigator for various projects supported by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science (Plan Nacional) and the BBVA Foundation (Beca Leonardo 2014). His research primarily focuses on the thermoelastic properties of Earth materials, earthquake rupture processes, energy balance, and the prevention and mitigation of earthquake damage through the Earthquake Early Warning System. Since 2010, these research lines have been applied to the study of earthquakes in the Ibero-Maghrebian region and to seismic instrumentation within the Western Mediterranean Broadband Seismic Network (UCM/ROA). In 2005, he was awarded (ranked first) a Ramón y Cajal fellowship at UCM, where he initiated a pioneering multidisciplinary research line bridging seismology and mineral physics to enhance the understanding of the Earth's interior. His research has been featured in high-impact journals such as PNAS (2010), Scientific Reports (2013, 2015, 2024), and Nature Communications (2019). Prof. Mattesini has over two decades of experience in university teaching at undergraduate and master’s levels. He is the author of two textbooks on Physics for Earth Sciences. He has extensive experience supervising doctoral theses and is currently mentoring four PhD students. Since 2021, he has been the Director of the UCM Research Group "Estructura y Dinámica de la Tierra, Sismicidad y Riesgo Sísmico" and previously held the position of Deputy Director of the Geoscience Institute (IGEO, CSIC/UCM). He is currently UCM's representative in the EarthScope Consortium.
