Doctor by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid with the thesis Estudio de una muestra completa de galaxias con emisión en h-alfa 1995. Supervised by Dr. Jaime Zamorano Calvo.

Full Professor at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). He is the coordinator of the GUAIX research group and currently serves as Deputy Director of the Department of Earth Physics and Astrophysics. Member of the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Physics and the Faculty of the Complutense University of Madrid. Jesús Gallego graduated with a degree in Physics in 1989 and obtained his PhD in Physics in 1995 (specializing in Astrophysics), receiving the UCM's Extraordinary Doctorate Award. After a postdoctoral research stay at the Lick Observatory at the University of California, Santa Cruz (USA), he returned to the UCM, first as an assistant professor and later as a professor. Research stays at Armagh Observatory, Rutherford and Appleton Laboratory (Oxford), University of Toulouse, and the Astronomy Center (Venezuela). In 2018, he was appointed Professor of Astrophysics at the UCM. He has 132 peer-reviewed articles (ADS) and an h-index of 47 (Google Scholar). Gallego has made more than 200 contributions to international conferences and has been a referee for international journals (ApJ, AJ, MNRAS, and A&A). Jesús Gallego has supervised 10 doctoral theses and an extensive list of research papers, master's theses, and other theses. For several years, he coordinated the master's degree in Astrophysics at the UCM and the doctoral program in Astrophysics at the UCM. For four years, he was the Rector's delegate and deputy director of Innovation at the UCM General Foundation. He is a member of the CADEEI Advisory Committee of the Teaching Division. Academic co-director of the Madrid Region's Technological Innovation and Talent in Space Technologies Cluster (CITT Tecnologías del Espacio). Spanish representative in the international consortium for the EMIR instrument for the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). He is currently the Spanish representative on the Council for the MOSAIC instrument for the future Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). He also represents the UCM on the Board for the TARSIS instrument for the 3.5 m telescope at the CAHA Observatory in Calar Alto. Founding patron of the non-profit Stars4All Foundation.
