Dr. Gabriele Abbondanza is Marie Curie Fellow (EU position) at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM - Faculty of Political Sciences and Sociology), Associate Researcher at the University of Sydney (USYD - School of Social and Political Sciences), and Associate Fellow at the Italian Institute of International Affairs (IAI), a global top-20 international relations think tank. Gabriele specialises in international relations and security studies, with an emphasis on: - the Indo-Pacific - irregular migration governance - middle power and great power theory - Australian foreign & security policy - Italian foreign & security policy He has published widely on these issues, including numerous articles in top-tier (Q1 and Q2) journals such as International Affairs, International Political Science Review, European Political Science, Contemporary Politics, Australian Journal of International Affairs, The International Spectator, and others. His latest monograph is "The foreign policy of irregular migration governance", published by Routledge in 2024, and his two co-edited books are "Awkward Powers" (2021) and "Italy and Australia" (2023), both published by Palgrave Macmillan. He has taught many university courses on international relations, security studies, migration politics, and other related subjects, and often engages with the media and with public institutions - including national parliaments, ministries, and diplomatic networks - to support the broader impact of his policy-relevant research.
