Abstract

his doctoral thesis analyzes blues music as an artistic, communicative and sociocultural phenomenon through a comparative study of the blues scenes in Austin, Texas and Madrid (Spain), two reference capitals with a different relationship regarding the genre’s original tradition. Known and promoted as the “live music capital of the world”, Austin is historically, geopolitically and socioculturally immersed in the blues tradition, while Madrid, historically distant, has been incorporated into it for decades through a complex, collective and daily musical practice. Despite their unequal recognition (both in their respective states and in global blues culture), the two scenes occupy an analogous place in the underground public sphere and are very similar in structure and organization. They share social and musical practices, texts, discourses, stories, imaginaries and forms of expression, and some of their participants have developed transatlantic collaborative bonds around blues and live music...
