Abstract

This work means a historic-literary interdisciplinary investigation, where it is done a revision of the three first warlike conflicts that happened in Spain during the XIX Century: the Guerra de la Independencia, and the two first guerras carlistas, throughout the twenty two novels of Pío Baroja, collected under the epigraph of Memorias de un hombre de acción. In the pages of this investigation I pretend to show that the «literary» character Eugenio de Aviraneta e Ibargoyen Echegaray y Alzate, besides being a distant antecessor of the author –second uncle in maternal line-, he took part in historical events of maximum importance in the Spain of the XIX Century, era where it takes part the events narrated in these novels. I also analyze how these incidents are not only a mere pretext of Baroja to insert, in a determined moment and space, a series of fictional characters, mixed with historical characters, to give then to his story a greater authenticity. Aviraneta, the main character of the series, was a character not only real, but important for the History of the nineteenth-century Spain, as thanks to him, among other things, it was signed the Convenio de Vergara and it occurred the end of the Primera Guerra Carlista, what leads into the raise to the throne of the legitimate heir of Fernando VII, Isabel II...
