Abstract

Materials used in the Conservation of Cultural Heritage have to be previously investigated to know their composition and long-term behaviour. It is therefore essential carried out their analytical characterization, to identify changes that it can suffer with the aging and the consequences for its initial properties. In this paper we study a variety of foam core board (foam core board neutral); this is a multilayer laminated material composed of an inner core of polystyrene foam covered with cardboard of pure cellulose containing a charge of calcite. Both components (cardboard and core) have been subjected to artificial accelerated aging under the action of UV radiation and they have shown a very different behaviour. Cardboard is practically stable in composition and colour (E00=0,470,20), while the polystyrene foam core undergoes high oxidation which affects its color (E00=19,100,49). FTIR-ATR analysis prove the formation of oxygenated groups, especially carbonyl group (C=O) whose presence increases with aging. The intensity of the band assigned to this group and E00 suffered are related by a nonlinear regression curve, which shows the evolution of the alteration of the poly(styrene).
