Abstract
At present most freshmen students starting their studies in Biological Sciences degree lack of enough background of mathematics, exhibiting in many cases a fear towards the study of this subject. In this paper we present a statistical study of student attitude and aptitude toward mathematics. Our conclusion is that students feel insecure dealing with abstraction and complexity, two of the main features of science. We conclude the paper showing our scepticism and criticism of the Bologna Process as a consequence of the basic assumptions behind the educational EU-plans.
