Abstract

Epidemiologic studies show one out of five children have some kind of dental trauma during school age; a lot of accidents happen at home or in the school. Parents, guardians, teachers and other responsible people are very important in the prognosis of these emergencies, this prognosis depends on early and suitable treatment. A slow or inappropriate treatment may have very grave consequences for a damaged tooth or teeth. Different studies on the education of those responsible for children, in which it was studied how to act in a dental trauma, show a low knowledge about this subject and the need for running an information campaign on this subject. The objective of this study was to assess parents knowledge and those responsible for children who were treated in the Faculty of Odontology which forms part of Complutense University of Madrid. For this study, eighty four inquiries with several different answer were distributed. Results showed that parents had a low knowledge about how to act in a dental trauma. Most parents had never been informed about the subject (91.67 %) and they would act in the wrong way if their child had a dental trauma. We can conclude based on this study that the population needs more information which would help parents in a dental trauma.
