Statins have been shown to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in the general population. In addition to their cholesterol-lowering effect, these drugs have other protective pleiotropic effects on the cardiovascular system. However, the effect of statins on cardiovascular risk in patients with chronic renal disease (CRD) is controversial. Moreover, the question of whether statins delay the progression of CRD and the effect of these drugs on proteinuria remain to be elucidated. The present review discusses the lipid alterations present in CRD and the possible effects of statins on inflammation, CRD progression, proteinuria and cardiovascular risk in this population group.
