Abstract
The Honduran coup détat left a challenge for key players outside of Latin America, such as the European Union. Although the EU was quick to condemn the military mob and place sanctions on the de facto government, showing the rapid community reaction in their external policy, over time some ambiguities could be seen, motivated by geopolitical calculation and fear of Hugo Chávez influence. From the Honduran case, the article analyzes relations between the EU and Latin America, in particular the tension between values and interests, and plants possible ways to deepen the ties.
