Zusammenfassung

This article reviews the international literature on the evolution of Inequality of Educational Opportunities (IEO), both from a substantive and a methodological point of view. While there is agreement in describing the expansion of education in the XXth Century, sociologists nowadays debate about the evolution of IEO in this period of time. Some of them provide evidence of persistent trends, and others show data that support a decreasing tendency in IEO. This controversy is eminently methodological, due to the pluralism and heterogeneity of methods and techniques in this field of analysis. One possible explanation for this endless controversy is the theoretical deficit of most of these analyses, especially those that show a change in IEO
