Resumen

La sepsis representa un problema sanitario grave, con alta morbimortalidad. Su evolución natural puede modificarse cuando se realiza un diagnóstico rápido y se comienza con las medidas de tratamiento de forma inmediata. El retraso en el tratamiento condiciona una alta mortalidad. Es preciso iniciar la hidratación parenteral inmediata, así como el tratamiento antibiótico empírico con sospecha de foco o sin ella posterior a la toma de hemocultivos y cultivo de otros focos según el caso. Las guías y consensos orientan en líneas generales, aunque inciden en la necesidad de un tratamiento individualizado a cada paciente.
