Background: Hallux valgus is one of the most common diseases affecting the foot. It leads to a progressive damage of the health and, in consequence, the quality of life of people presenting the deformity. Along last years so much studies investigating the deformity causes and related have been carried out but, despite this, only a few works related the quality of life of people and the presence of the disease. Object: To determinate de impact that Hallux Valgus has on several quality of life dimensions of people who present the disease in the city of A Coruña. Methods: The present work is an observational case-control study carried out on a consecutive and non-randomized sample population (A Coruña, N = 463 subjects) (α= 0.05; accurate ± 5%). Once the informed consent was obtained, the grade of Hallux Valgus, the general health and the foot-specific health status were assessed with the Manchester Scale and the Foot Health Status Questionnaire (FHSQ). Results: A total of 275 people (59,39%) were diagnosed of Hallux Valgus in the study sample population. The subjects presenting the disease showed lower scores on the quality of life dimensions assessed by the FHSQ such as foot pain (77,88 ± 20,29), foot function (84,47 ± 18,84), shoe (54,39 ± 29,51), foot health (59,49 ± 26,96), general health (70,87 ± 21,99) and physical activity (84,80 ± 20,45) than the control group (p < 0,05). Regarding the social function and vigour dimensions, the Hallux Valgus group showed lower scores (83,90 ± 19,75 and 56,22 ± 18,11 respectively) than the control group although in these two cases p was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The presence of Hallux Valgus has a negative impact on the quality of life related to general health and foot-specific health in people who suffer from it.
