Abstract

This research aims to show the cinematic features that Tennessee Williams’ narrative has, and how we can see its presence in most adaptations based on his dramatic works. The drama and film narratives of the author’s works have coincided in time, and both the reader and the viewer have been able to appreciate the approaches that his works have had within the world of cinema. Two worlds that, in the case of Williams, have never been apart and, as we will see in this essay, have nourished respectively despite their different characteristics. The analysis of Tennessee Williams’ film adaptations, chronologically systematized, offers the opportunity to appreciate the interrelationship between them, but at the same time, depending on who exercises responsibility for adaptations and problems arising at the time of their completion, we can see how the result eventually differs from the original project. In the research, we apply a common methodological filter to the most significant adaptations, arising different convergences and divergences between plays and film adaptations, and demonstrating the enormous cinematographic potential of the dramatic plays of Tennessee Williams.
