Abstract

Objectives: The objective has been to improve the quality of Microbiology teaching by updating the teaching methodology, introducing active learning as an activity based on the detection of nasal carriers of Staphylococcus aureus to improve the skills to be acquired by students as part of their integral formation. Methods: In this study, 56 and 72 students (total 128) of the Second Course of the Podiatry Degree of the Complutense University of Madrid from 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 academic years, respectively, participated. The students attended to the Microbiology laboratory. Results: A total of 29 students (22.7%) were nasal carriers of S. aureus of which one student was nasal carrier of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). The assessment of the activity by the students was very positive and there was an improvement in knowledge acquisition. Conclusion: The work in the Microbiology laboratory together with the update in the teaching methodology can improve the academic performance of Microbiology students when related to their future professional practice and the microbiological diagnosis.
