Abstract

ESES is an epileptic encephalopathy associated to Non-Rapid Eye Movement (N-REM) sleep. It usually presents with different clinical symptoms (behavioral disturbances, seizures, cognitive impairment). It is an age-related syndrome, presenting between 3 and 14 years of age, with a peak at 4 to 7 years. The majority of studies show a slight male predominance. Traditionally, it has been differentiated between idiopathic and structural/symptomatic ESES. Etiology seems to play an important role in the course and prognosis of ESES. Children with idiopathic etiology tend to have a better prognosis. Symptomatic/structural if often not benign and tends to have a major impact, longer duration and higher density of ESES...
