Abstract

The following doctoral thesis describes the process of creating several instruments for the assessment of communicative competence adopting a broader perspective beyond the traditional one and, in addition, it assesses intercultural competence. The result of this is the creation of a Spanish proficiency level test that integrates, in addition to the evaluation of the overall linguistic competence, the cultural and pragmatic components that are also part of a knowledge of the language. This knowledge is evaluated orally and in writing. To that end, three studies are carried out. The first of them develops an evaluation instrument that measures the communicative and intercultural competence through the oral production of a group of Spanish speakers as a second language. The second study devises a method for evaluating the intercultural component. Both studies are the starting point of the third study, which is the creation of an overall proficiency level test which evaluates all language competence skills in Spanish as a second language.
