Abstract

As the young people are the usual consumers of movies, it can be interesting to observe how Paleontology is being treated in the movies and decide whether they can serve as a tool to consistently explain the evolution of life on Earth. We propose a method to assess a series of paleontological aspects of certain films., Only 20% of the 25 films analyzed show scientific rigor. While the cronological scale and nomenclature of time periods are those worst treated, the aspects related to the anatomy of the prehistoric organisms receive better treatment. Although teaching the history of life is not the main objective of these films, they can be used as motivating elements to stimulate a critical viewpoint. To this end we propose some questions and didactic resources that could be useful for Earth Science teachers.
