Abstract

This paper presents some popular proverbs used in the spoken Arabic of Damascus nowadays. The aim is to add new data for the study of this dialect as well as reflect the survival of traditional proverbs in a modern urban Arabic Dialect. Furthermore, the ar ticle dedicates a chapter to list and describe in detail the most relevant sources of proverbs focused in the dialectal area of the Levant. The data has been gathered from three famous serials broadcasted in Syria by the satellite TV in the last years. Th e proverbs are transcribed, translated into Spanish, explained. Also, for most of them a similar proverb in Spanish is included. Besides, documented variants in Arabic and possible events that originated the proverbs are provided if possible. On the other hand, relevant dialectal features are pointed out.
