Resumen
Translation of fictional texts entails several challenges, among which we could highlight the translation of fictional particulars orirrealia, whichconstitute the lexical units that name fictional concepts. On the one hand, this is partly explained by their non-actual existence and their lack of reference to real-world objects, which therefore makesthe task of terminology research more difficult to the translatorandlimits the understanding of the fictional text. On the other side, translation of this type of lexical units requires creative skills from the translator, who must create new words to name irrealiausing the word-formation processes that actually exist in the target language. In this sense, two questions may arise: can irrealiabe considered as a particular type of neologism? If thisis the case, are they created using the same word-formation processes as the rest ofwords ? In order to give an answer to these questions, the present paper aims at studying the word-formation processes used to create new words inthe two Frenchtranslationsof The Lord of the Rings, by J. R. R. Tolkien (1954-1955), carried out first by Francis Ledoux (1972-1973) and more recently by Daniel Lauzon (2014-2016) and published in both cases by Christian Bourgois as Le Seigneur des Anneaux. Finally, we shouldbe able to draw conclusions about the linguistic nature of these lexical unitsin contrast with neologismsand the consequences of the use of a certain word-formation process for the translation strategy towards the text.nish.
