Abstract

This research aims to deepen an unrecognized aspect of the history of the European integration process, that relating to the cultural sphere. The analysis will focus on multiple cultural circulation policies, on audiovisual initiatives and educational projects, as well as on EU communication campaigns. The reception of these methods of spreading the Europeanist consensus will be analyzed in the light of two case studies, Italy and Spain, with the aim of reconstructing affinities and divergences in the paths of two Southern European countries. Specifically, the research will be focused on three main heuristic suggestions: in which terms did Brussels promote the foundations of a new system of government capable of overcoming the Nation-state? How did the Italian and Spanish ruling classes interpret the Europeanist frame and succeeded in influencing their civil societies with their own myths? And finally, is it possible to describe the path of Italy and Spain at the end of the 20th century in terms of a progressive «europeanisation of the masses»?..
