Doctor by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid with the thesis España y la República Federal de Alemania (1949-1966) política, economía y emigración, entre la guerra fría y la distensión 2005. Supervised by Dr. Juan Carlos Pereira Castañares.

Carlos Sanz Díaz is Associate Professor (tenured) of History at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), where he obtained his PhD with a dissertation on German-Spanish relations during the Cold War. He is the holder of the Jean Monnet Chair at UCM on the History of Europe and European Integration, a senior researcher of the Instituto Complutense de Estudios Internacionales (ICEI) and currently serves as Director of the Department of Early Modern and Contemporary History at UCM. He teaches at the Complutense University since 2006 and at the Diplomatic School of Spain (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) since 2017, where he also served as Head of Studies in 2020-2022. Carlos Sanz is the author of several books and dozens of peer-reviewed articles and book chapters published with prestigious academic presses. His research focuses on the History of International Relations, Foreign Policy of Contemporary Spain, Migration History, European Integration, and Scientific and Technical Cooperation, with increasing emphasis on New Diplomatic History and Transnational and Global History. He has been a visiting researcher at Harvard University, Universität Bonn, Freie Universität Berlin, and the Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschungen (Potsdam); and a visiting instructor at Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church (Budapest) and Universidad de San Sebastián (Santiago de Chile). Selected visiting fellowships include: • Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies, Harvard University (USA), 2015. • Zentrum für Zeithistorische Forschungen, Potsdam (Germany), 2012. • Friedrich-Meinecke-Institut, Freie Universität Berlin (Germany), 2000–2001. Since 2024, he is the Principal Investigator of the research project “Spain in Europe: A Historical and Comparative Perspective on the Spanish and Portuguese Accessions to the European Communities” (Funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science). He has directed several competitive research projects funded by national and European institutions. He has supervised eight PhD theses, and is currently supervising six doctoral candidates. Carlos Sanz is a member of the Research Group on the History of International Relations (GHISTRI) at UCM. He served as President of the AEMIC (Association for the Study of Contemporary Iberian Exiles and Migrations) from 2011 to 2016, and as Vice President from 2016 to 2020. He was editor of Migraciones & Exilios. Cuadernos de la AEMIC, and a member of the editorial board of Cuadernos de Historia Contemporánea (UCM) until 2022. He is also a member of the advisory board of the H-SPAIN network (H-NET), and serves on the steering board of the Spanish Commission of History of International Relations (CEHRI), and of the board of the Commission of History of International Relations, affiliated with the International Committee of Historical Sciences (ICHS).
