Throwing is considered one of the most important actions in handball (Eliasz & Wit, 1998). Its effectiveness very often depends on the throwing velocity of the ball (Eliasz, Janik y Wit, 1990; Gorostiaga, Granados, Ibañez y Izquierdo, 2005), since this determines the opportunities of the goalkeeper and defenders to intercept it (Párraga Sanchez & Oña 2001, Van Muijen, Joris, Kemper y Van Ingen Schenau, 1991). Hence, there is an enormous importance of finding an appropriate way to measure the throwing capacity of the handball player. Though there is little evidence on how defence players and decision making in the velocity of ball release affect the shot, these two factors seem to show some influence on it (López, 2005; Pardo González y Mayo, 2007, Van der Wende, 2005, Vila et al., 2009). The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of specific technique and decision making in the handball players throwing velocity of different competitive levels. One hundred and six handball players, members of the elite international teams (E), amateur (A) and pre-amateur players (P) were evaluated in four throwing progressive degrees of specificity: a) throwing a heavy medicinal ball (THMB) b) throwing a light medicinal ball (TLMB), c) throwing velocity without opposition (TVWO) and d) throwing velocity with goalkeeper opposition (TVGO). Pearson correlation analysis was used to determine the relationship between releases, whereas related samples T student’s test was used to determine the difference between TVWO and TVGO. The relationship between the less specific throwing (THMB) and the release velocity (TVWO and TVGO) was not increased in any group tested, being low in P Group. In contrast, there was a significant relationship between high TLMB and TVWO, both with similar levels of technical specificity and without opposition, i.e., without involvement of decision-making factors. A negative influence of the decision-making factor in the release velocity has been confirmed, as values are significantly lower in the presence of cognitive factors. In the same way, the relationship between TVWO and TVGO is not high, which may suggest that the best values on TVWO need not match the best in TVGO. The analysis of differences by applying ANOVA test showed a substantial increase as the competitive level improves (pre-amateur, amateur and elite). Thus, differences are significant in all four releases. Similarly, age and playing the offensive line were confirmed as determinants in the three releases of greater specificity. Finally, it has been proved that the throwing velocity and the competitive level determine the release effectiveness in the higher specific level (TVGO).
