Abstract

In recent decades, a number of practitioners in education have defended the use of humour, laughter and "fun" in the teaching profession, highlighting numerous beneficial aspects: establishing a better relationship with students, reducing stress and anxiety, managing conflict, providing an emotional reward that motivates participation and study, and communicating the subject matter more efficiently, promoting attention, creativity and memory. This article will evaluate the theoretical and empirical justification of this "playful" model of learning, and will clarify some of the ideas commonly held regarding these issues
