Abstract

Individual number 12, exhumed at the Visigothic necropolis in Duratón (Segovia, Spain) was found lying in a supine position inside a grave in the ground with no personal adornments. !t is a very robust male adult (between 50 and 60 years of age), presenting two pathologies with an independent origin, which occur in a particular anatomical area: the right hip. The first pathology, which affected the femoral head and the right innominate, was diagnosed as Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease. The femoral head presents a much bigger diameter than usual, with a porous articular surface, absence of the fovea capitis, and an arthritic secondary growth of the bone borders, towards the neck; the coxae shows a large acetabulum with osseous neoformarion. The second injury, described as unifocal eosinophilic granuloma, is located within the inner surface of the right ilium, occupying practically the whole iliac fossa. The development of both pathologies, and their possible effects on the individual's mobility, are discussed by the authors of this article.
