Resum

This paper explores the emergence of Spanish language as a tool to conduct Spain’s foreign policy under Primo de Rivera’s dictatorship. I argue that, in the 1920s, Spanish cultural diplomacy promoted Spanish language education in Europe and the United States to gain in soft power in the international field, whilst at the same time advocating for a codified standard form of Spanish that could help Spain to maintain a cultural sphere of influence in Hispanic America. Keywords: Spanish Cultural Diplomacy, Spanish language, Primo de Rivera dictatorship, soft power, Hispanic America.
