Abstract

Given the conservative and progressive ideological trends in19th-century Spain, whose influence can be found in a diverse array of fields, including education, this thesis seeks to analyze the visions ofEpicurus and Lucretius taught in that era through an examination of Spanish handbooks on classical Greek and Latin literature. These twoancient writers were selected because of the stigma that has arisen around them and the polarized opinions surrounding their philosophicteachings. In some ways, epicureanism fits within 18th- and 19th century ideals.
