Resumen

La tasa de envejecimiento crece rápidamente en España, por lo que es importante que los médicos y los profesionales sanitarios estemos formados para atender sus necesidades. La vejez no es una enfermedad. La persona mayor requiere una atención especial por su fragilidad y por la importante comorbilidad. En la valoración de la persona de edad avanzada tiene gran importancia conocer los factores sociales, los acontecimientos vitales y la situación psíquica. La depresión es la enfermedad más prevalente en el paciente anciano. Los síntomas de la depresión pueden ser menos intensos y fluctuantes, generan gran incapacidad y no son muy distintos a los del paciente adulto. El tratamiento puede hacerse con antidepresivos en dosis suficientes y con psicoterapia.
