Abstract

The present investigation has as object of study - Archivos Fotigráficos de las Cámaras municipales in Portugal: photography as information and document. The theme is contemporary and the approach gives visibility to a photographic cultural heritage that urges the treatment of photography at both the informational and documentary levels, on file. We also asked about the role of the information management actor, in terms of the document that directly affects the archival profession. For this is no longer that of a technician (a) keeper (a), conservative (a) and usher (a) of documents at the service of researchers, among others, to assume the role of manager (a) information. As for the objectives, we intend to make known the current condition of photography in the custody of municipal archives in Portugal. Thus, we propose to contribute to scientific, informational and documentary knowledge, a need that has been felt for some time, with regard to users who use this type of information / document and which, by inheritance, archivals defend. The method chosen for coverage was hypothetical-deductive. As for the procedural methods, the comparative-typological approach was used as a strategy to capture the constitutive diversity of a given phenomenon, which is known in a vague and undifferentiated way. Subsequently, a questionnaire survey was administered in order to collect data, so necessary for the investigation. The data collected were based on the questionnaire that was sent by email to the 308 Municipal Councils of the Mainland and the Autonomous Regions of the Azores (19) and Madeira (11). Of this universe surveyed, only 88 (28.5%) municipal memory institutions responded. Of these 88 responses, we counted 39 (44.32%) that have photographic collections, against 49 (55.68%) that do not have, at the moment, a photographic collection. However, photographs awaiting treatment wait in a 'deposit' of a file adapted to environmental conditions, for the protection, preservation and conservation of photographs, waiting for the best opportunity, to be organized and treated as information and documents.
