Abstract

There is enormous political power in shared emotions that everyone senses, which is examined in this book on the occasion of the global crisis of Covid-19. What is the historical origin of this crisis, and what does it teach? Why, amid the pandemic crisis, do states seem to have recovered part of their power? What are the political risks that loom in these difficult times? Who should rule now: epidemiologists or politicians? Why do we all feel so fragile? Do we as individuals have any power in the face of this crisis? This book explains how the Covid-19 pandemic has changed our lives within the framework of a more general explanation of how all cultural changes work. It also helps understand the complex political and emotional language of these times of crisis and why there is talk of war and social distancing. It investigates the experience of time and the role of social networks as a meeting place. It explains the political power of fear, sadness, paranoia, uncertainty, and loneliness while analyzing the possible role of collective emotions that generate skepticism in many, such as hope, compassion, and serenity—emotions that, nevertheless, amid uncertainty, still have something to teach. Instead of offering a negative perspective of collective emotions and their role, this essay bets on their value as signs on the way that help human beings become aware of their fragility and, paradoxically, take awareness of their true power to overcome any crisis.
