Abstract

The present doctoral research has as its main object the analysis of the filmography of Irish director Martin McDonagh, composed of the films: Six Shooter (2004); In Bruges (2008); Seven Psychopaths (2012) and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017). The main objective is to identify in what way the defining characteristics of black comedy are present, based on an analysis sheet originally created for this purpose and elaborated after a longitudinal study of the black comedy subgenre, from 1940 to 2021. The overall methodology to be followed for the study of Martin McDonagh's black comedy is content analysis in its qualitative form. Bibliographic research is conducted beforehand to achieve an understanding of the black comedy phenomenon and the development of three methods is proposed: descriptive-deductive, for the review of authors and the elaboration of keywords; comparative, for the detailed understanding of 49 black comedy films based on their similarities and differences; and analytical-synthetic, for the application of an analysis card to Martin McDonagh's filmography. As a result of the research, 6 films out of the total sample of 49 are not considered black comedies. Furthermore, it can be stated that black comedy is a subgenre of comedy that has inherent properties based on black humor, grotesqueness, absurdity, socialcriticism, violence, chaos, social commotion and taboo-breaking.
