Abstract

This text revises critically the grand developments of mass communication research, particularly in Britain during the last fifteen years. A new revisionist movement comes up which challenges the critical paradigms dominant during the last years of the seventies and firsts of the eighties. This movement takes the form of a challenge of society's inherent models, of media organisations characterisation, of media content representations, of audiences concept and aesthetic appraisals which are under the majority of "critical" research. The author argues that this revisionism is in part a reversion to some conventional wisdoms discredited of the past, in fact a revivalism movement masked under the appearance of new and innovative thinking. In any case, part of the new critique can be seen as a reformulation which potentially can impulse the critical tradition in communication research.
