Abstract

Objective: to assess the efficacy of a mouthrinse containing potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride in the reduction of dentin hypersensitivity secondary to surgical periodontal therapy. Patients and methods: 30 patients prior to pocket reduction periodontal surgery were selected according to pre-determined criteria, they were informed and recruited to a six week clinical trial. After a 1st week post-operatory, patients were randomly assigned to use either an experimental mouthrinse (FNa-No3K) (experimental group) or a placebo mouthrinse (control group). In both groups the degree of hypersensitivity was assessed by means of both a visual-analogue scale and a verbal scale, using both temperature and osmotic estimuli. Assessments were performed: before surgery and 1, 3 and 6 weeks postoperatory. Results: Both groups began with minimum hipersensitivity scores and both groups suffered a similar significant rise in hypersensitivity at the 1 week post-operatory evaluation. After the first week, in the experimental group there was a significant reduction in hypersensitivity at 3 and 6 weeks. At 6 weeks the sensitivity scores were very similar to baseline. In the control group significant reductions only occurred at 6 weeks with osmotic estimuli and never reaching pre-surgery scores. lnter-group comparisons demonstrated a significant bigger reduction in hypersensitivity in the experimental group, both at 3 and 6 weeks These results demonstrate the efficacy of this desensitizer mouthrinse in the management of dentin hypersensitivity secondary to periodontal surgical therapy.
