Chalazion is a common morbidity in the ophthalmology practice. However there is no clear consensus on its management with the different current therapeutic alternatives. It has been shown in previous studies that the treatment of chalazion with one or two intralesional injections of triamcinolone acetonide (AT) is a similar treatment in efficacy and security as its incision and curettage (I&C)3-6, 8,12-14, 22, 24-26. Currently, there is a trend towards surgical treatment of chalazion, which leads to an increase in the costs of public health services. The cost of an operating room could be significantly reduced when performing the treatment with AT injection. Moreover, it would reduce the waiting time for the solution of the patient’s problem, their absence from work, the anxiety generated by a surgical intervention. Finally, it would reduce the waiting lists for the performance of other surgical interventions. This study was done with the purpose of comparing the cost and effectiveness of both therapeutic options, given the growing importance of cost-effectiveness and cost-utility studies in national health systems. This comparison has not been studied yet, so this doctoral thesis aims to do so and provide new evidence between these two therapeutic options...
