Abstract

Among all the stressful or traumatic events that can condition a proper developmental progress, pediatric cancer is one of those that has aroused most interest in the scientific field, from both a medical and psychological approach. Pediatric cancer patients must undergo treatments and procedures that can affect different areas of their development.Therefore, it is necessary to understand the implications of this disease for both cancer patients and their parents in order to focus future interventions on the developmental and personal characteristics of each patient. The main objective of this doctoral thesis has been to analyze the impact of cancer on children and their parents in relation to different research variables, such as emotional experiences or cognitions related to the illness. Furthermore, the type of communication within families regarding the disease has been examined and a review of the literature on communication protocols with oncology patients has been carried out.
