Álvaro Briales is a lecturer in the Department of Applied Sociology at the Complutense University of Madrid. His thesis, ‘Superfluous Time: A Critical Sociology of Unemployment’, analysed the social transformations linked to mass unemployment in Spain following the global crisis of 2008. His research interests, publications and translations focus on the sociology of unemployment and work, critical theory of capitalism, social time and its relationship with feminist perspectives, systems of trade union and collective solidarity, and post-capitalist alternatives. Previously, he has worked at the Fundación de los Comunes, the Open University of Catalonia and the Autonomous University of Madrid.
