He completed his PhD at the Autonomous University of Madrid in 2007, conducting his research at the Severo Ochoa Centre for Molecular Biology and receiving the Extraordinary Doctorate Award. He has participated in 14 competitive research projects and currently serves as Principal Investigator of a National Plan project focused on the development of nanotechnology-based therapies against leishmaniasis, co-led with Dr. Socorro Espuelas at the University of Navarra. He maintains active academic and scientific collaborations with the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (Havana, Cuba), the PECET group at the University of Antioquia (Medellín, Colombia), and the International Center for Zoonoses at the Central University of Ecuador (Quito). Since 2024, he has been part of a collaborative ARES–UCE international programme between the Academy of Research and Higher Education (Wallonia–Brussels Federation) and the Central University of Ecuador, dedicated to designing and evaluating therapies for human leishmaniasis. He is a Tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Animal Health at the Complutense University of Madrid, with four recognized research periods (sexenios) and two teaching periods (quinquenios). He teaches in the Master’s Programme in Virology and in the Veterinary Medicine degree, where he coordinates the course in Microbiology and Immunology. Since 2012, he has served as an evaluator for the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI), having reviewed 14 research proposals. In 2016, he received the UCM–OTRI Award for Scientific Outreach, and he regularly contributes to national media outlets (Cadena SER, TVE, Telemadrid, and digital press). He leads the ICPVet research group at UCM (https://investigacionvet.es/) and heads the Translational Research Group on Leishmaniasis at the i+12 Research Institute (Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre). In 2020, he was awarded the DOCENTIA Teaching Excellence Diploma. He is a member of the Spanish Society for Immunology (SEI) and the Spanish Society for Parasitology (SOCEPA). He has supervised two PhD theses, has an h-index of 20 (SCP), and is the author of 50 JCR-indexed scientific publications and three patents related to leishmaniasis vaccines.
