Abstract

This article analyses how multilingualism is dealt with in Spanish classrooms and to what extent students' languages are used as educational resources. For this purpose,we will focus on two main processes: first, the sociolinguistic order established in the school and then, the role played by immigrant languages in educational practice. At a later point, it is examined Çwhether the plurality of languages hinders school knowledge or, on the contrary, it takes advantage of the culturally diverse reality of the classroom. Finally, the main research question is whether students' previous linguistic knowledge is valued in the classroom or just ignored, that is, whether it fosters students' cultural de-capitalization or not.
