Abstract
This paper deals with the fundamental distinction that there is in education between education as a process of imparting knowledge and education understood as a way of forming human beings. This is a very old distinction, that goes back to Greek philosophy and culture but becomes to full light and consciousness in the European Enlightment. The paper examines the philosophical background of education in the Modern Age. The paper ends stating a criticism of the individualism in relation to the concept of education in the Enlightment and the author contends that the above mentioned conception of education must be reexamined taking in account the social dimension of the human being.
