Abstract

This paper examines, using mainly nineteenth-century sources, some of the issues raised by the abundant presence of adulteration and the failure of its control in Britain during the Mid-Victorian period. First, it describes the persistence of food adulteration at the beginning of the second half of the nineteenth century, details the features of this practice and thinks about the content and the credibility of existing assessments on their extent. Second, it tells the first legislative attempts and the only available legal provision approved against the food fraud (1860). Finally, it deals with the reasons for resistance to the adoption and implementation of proposed legislative initiatives, which means that Britain was, when his economic and political hegemony was unrivaled, a dangerous place for the health of its citizens.
