Resumen

Vitamin A restriction has been proposed as a strategy for improving meat and carcass quality in farm animals. We studied the effects of dietary vitamin A restriction on productive traits, tissue fatty acid (FA) composition and expression of SCD gene in Iberian pigs. Forty Torbiscal pigs were given a standard or a Vitamin A restricted diet from two months of age until sacrifice at 100 and 160kg LW. Diet had no effect on growth, fatness, yields or intramuscular fat, but animals receiving no vitamin A supplementation showed higher monounsaturated FA and lower saturated FA concentration in backfat and loin samples. Adipose tissue SCD gene expression was higher in vitamin A restricted animals, in accordance with phenotypic results.
