FRANCISCO JOSÉ CORTÉS VIECO is Associate Professor in the Department of English Studies at Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), where since 2013, he lectures on British & North American Literature and Gender Studies, while he is currently the International Mobility Coordinator for students from the Bachelor's degree in English Studies (Erasmus+). He has previously taught English language or literature to students from Autónoma University of Madrid, CESIF (Center for Higher Education of the Pharmaceutical Industry, Madrid), Ben Gurion University of the Negev (Israel), and Manhattan College (Riverdale, New York). He holds a PhD in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies from Alcalá University (Outstanding Thesis Award 2018-2019 and Best Thesis at the 1st edition of the ‘Francisca de Nebrija’ Awards, 2020) and a PhD in Literary Studies from UCM (Outstanding Thesis Award 2012-2013). In 2018, Dr. Cortés Vieco was a Visiting Fellow in the Department of History of Science at Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States), thanks to the postdoctoral research scholarship awarded to him by the Real Colegio Complutense (RCC)-Harvard University. In addition, he has participated in several continuing education courses from different British institutions: University of Oxford (2008), University of Edinburgh (2016), and University of Cambridge (2017). Dr. Cortés Vieco has been a speaker in many conferences and congresses on English literature and women’s studies in Spain and abroad, and he is currently a member of two research groups: “Gender Studies in English-speaking Countries” (UCM) and “Women Writers and Writings” (University of Seville). He is also the author of almost 40 Spanish and international publications, including 2 monographs on women’s literature ( Benjamin Franklin Institute 2016, Peter Lang Oxford 2021); chapters of books in publishers, such as Brill-Rodopi, DeGruyter, L´Harmattan or Fundamentos; peer-reviewed articles in indexed journals on English literature and gender studies, like Asparkía, Feminismo/s, Anglia, International Journal of English Studies or Prage Journal of English Studies; and edited books with critical introductions and literary translations (two volumes of the poetry of Emily Brontë and Christina Rossetti). Main areas of expertise: women's studies, gender and feminism, particularly women’s literature of the 19th and 20th centuries in English-speaking countries, often interrelated to the domain of medical humanities, the Gothic and the influence of popular culture (like fairy tales) on their writings. His research often chooses the following subject matters: the female body and biology; women’s sexuality and eroticism; sexual reproduction, pregnancy, childbirth and maternity; domestic and gender violence; psychosomatic and nervous disorders; trauma and suicide, with an emphasis on approaches from French feminist theory and literary criticism, writing therapy ('scripto-therapy'), and psychoanalysis. His most recent projects revolve around the autobiographies, novels and poetry of women writers, such as Charlotte Brontë, Edith Wharton, Jean Rhys, Anaïs Nin, Dorothy Parker, Anita Loos, Doris Lessing, Anne Sexton, Cherríe Moraga, or survivors from the Holocaust.
