Abstract

The interest in reaching an optimal state of health by adopting and following a varied and balanced diet, characterized by a predominance of foods of plant origin, has increasede specially in recent years. Beyond satisfying hunger and nutritional needs, consumers demand food products that promote health, better well-being and quality of life, as well as to achieve an adequate organism function and prevent the onset of diseases. In the frontier “food – pharma” are functional foods and food supplements, which contain nutrients and bioactive compounds with significant beneficial effects on health. This Doctoral Thesis focuses on the review of the legal framework of food products "food– pharma" having three international references (USA, Japan and Europe); as well as in the study of some practical case studies of functional foods and food supplements as a source of nutrients and bioactive compounds, and the assessment of the application of nutrition and health claims according to the European legislation in force...
